COOLIEF® is a minimally invasive day procedure used to reduce long-term hip & knee joint pain, especially pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Instead of treating the joint itself, COOLIEF® focuses on the small nerves that carry pain signals from the hip or knee to the brain.

By reducing these pain signals, the hip or knee can feel much less painful, even though the joint condition hasn’t changed.

The procedure does not involve surgery, joint replacement, or large incisions, and patients usually go home the same day.

How Does COOLIEF® Work?

COOLIEF® uses controlled heat to gently interrupt the nerves that send pain messages.

COOLIEF® Cooled RF is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that uses cooled radiofrequency energy to target sensory nerves responsible for chronic pain.

Procedure time varies depending on the area treated and your doctor’s approach. According to physicians who perform COOLIEF®, the actual treatment time is approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds per nerve.

The whole knee procedure may take between 30 to 60 minutes.

Most patients feel little to no pain during the procedure. You may feel some temporary discomfort at the treatment site, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

COOLIEF® treatment involves no surgical incisions.
